What I do:
I can help! I offer one-on-one intervention sessions for students in preschool through sixth grade. The sessions are personalized to address your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Utilizing a multi-sensory structured literacy approach, I will work with your child to improve these essential components of reading:
- phonemic awareness
- phonics
- vocabulary
- comprehension
- fluency
- spelling
- handwriting
Students who think and learn differently, learn well when the instruction is explicit, individual and multi-sensory. The structured literacy approach (also known as the Orton-Gillingham approach) incorporates all of the learning modes – visual, auditory and kinesthetic. The process of learning to read is broken down into each necessary component. Students learn to analyze each word, so guessing is eliminated. They break words down, sound by sound, and put them together again.
Students learn that the English writing system is logical and systematic and can be investigated scientifically.
- Dyslexia Screening- I provide Dyslexia screening. This screening assesses phonological awareness, phonics and decoding skills, vocabulary (oral and reading), reading (accuracy, fluency and comprehension), spelling, writing and executive function. The purpose of this informal assessment or “screening” is to determine if your child would benefit from an evidence-based, multi-sensory, systematic, explicit phonics program for literacy intervention.
- Dyslexia Therapy- Dyslexia ranges from mild to severe. Therapy sessions are based on student and family needs. One hour sessions available from four to five times weekly. Progress monitoring is provided to determine student progress.
